The invention describes a gas generator, in particular for passive retention systems having regulatable gas flow. Conventional systems do not permit a regulation of the gas flow or only a stepwise regulation. Inflation conditions which are not adjusted to the specific requirements have the consequence of failing to optimally control the processes which are relevant to safety. In accordance with the invention continuous regulation is achieved in that a movable, controllable cover is positioned, for example by means of a magnet and a spring, in such a fashion that the flow output opening can be opened or closed in accordance with the requirements. In this fashion the retention system can be controlled in a temperature independent fashion and in the event of an accident, the inflation velocity and inflation pressure can be adjusted to prevailing conditions and even be changed during the course of the accident.
