A gas heater includes a gas burner system having a gas burner engulfed by a cullet that diffuses the gas flowing from the burner. The cullet is preferably broken tempered glass and is otherwise chosen from among materials which are non-moisture absorbent. The cullet and burner may be contained within a burner box having a propagation plate covering with slots to specifically locate the flame to avoid contact with an artificial log set for safe, efficient operation. The burner system immediately produces a dancing, multi-colored, natural-looking flame while eliminating instance of pop and flash-back. The cullet insulates the burner and therefore prolongs its life, as well as allows a relatively maintenance free, clean burning and cost effective burner system compatible with different types of gases.
