GAS LASER CATHODE AND PROCESS FOR MAKING SAME ABSTRACT A gas laser cathode shaped at a sleeve with a three- -layer wall from carbides of metals of the side subgroup of Group V of the Periodic System. The external layers of the three-layer structure have a composition MeC0.74 to 0.95, the internal layer - MeC0.92 to 0.98 respectively or said second layer is made from a semicarbide MeC0.5. The process for producing the cathode comprises heating a graphite blank in an atmosphere of tantalum or niobium pentachloride and argon to a tempera- ture within the range of from 2,300 to 2,500°C and maintain- ing at this temperature for a period of from 5 to 8 hours. Another embodiment of the process for making the cathode according to the present invention comprises heating a tantalum or niobium blank in the atmosphere of argon to a temperature within the range of from 2,000 to 2,200°C and maintaining at this temperature for 5 to 10 hours.
