ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A fermentation process and a fermenter which operate with an over-ressure, preferably between 3 and 10 bars gauge, and an energy recovery system for use in con- junction therewith. Off-gas leaving the upper part of the fermenter passes to a gas expander which produces power for use in the compressor used in supplying air to the fermenter. The invention provides an efficient means for operating a process for producing single cell protein.
