ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A gas liquid contact apparatus having a grid formed of a plurality of spaced apart grid members which are connected together by a plurality of connector members. The grid has surfaces which are wettable by liquid flowing down- wardly thereon and also has a plurality of vertical passages which permit the flow of ascending gases through the grid. Each of the grid members comprises an elongated upstanding web having upper and lower flanges which extend laterally from the upper and lower portions of the web, each of the upper and lower flanges being discontinuously formed of a plurality of flange segments which extend alternately in opposite lateral directions from the web. A particular feature of the apparatus is that the webs have interruptions located below and in vertical alignment with the ends of the flange segments, the interruptions being operable to cause liquid which flows downwardly from the ends of the flange segments to spread longi- tudinally along said webs.
