ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A gas lock breaking device for use in well pumps having a standing valve and a piston equiped with a traveling valve. The device includes a valve closure unseating rod which is adapted to be attached to the standing valve so that it is unyielding with respect to the standing valve. The traveling valve has a ball valve situated within an elongated cage, with a valve seating means at the bottom of the cage having an opening to permit entry of the unseating rod into the cage during each stroke of the pump. The length of the rod and the cage are such that at the extreme downward position of the traveling valve, the ball valve is unseated by the rod without being impacted against the top of the cage by the rod. The upper end of the rod includes a dished portion which tends to distribute the contact between the rod and the ball valve and tends to maintain the ball valve in the central area of the cage. The rod causes the traveling ball valve to be positively unseated during at least a certain portion of the cycle to allow escaped gases in the area beneath the traveling valve.
