ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A gas phase free, liquid chlorine electrochemical system and apparatus therefor (an electrochemical cell) are described in which the housing containing the electrodes is filled with sufficient electrolyte so that the pressure therein is sufficient to liquefy the chlorine as it is generated. no space being provided in which gaseous chlorine could accumulate. A cation permselective membrane separates the chlorine electrode from the non-chlorine electrode. Two reservoirs are provided, one of which is connected to a chlorine compartment. Provision is also made for causing electrolyte to flow through the chlorine compartment. In this apparatus, phase transitions of the chlorine into and from its gaseous phase are prevented. thus eliminating a source of substantial inefficiency in the operation of electrochemical systems involving chlorine.
