ABSTRACT A sampling device for automatically obtaining a gas sample from a gas stream at a selected instant of time and which is particularly suitable for use with breath alcohol detection or analysis. A movable piston or diaphragm is arranged to automatically draw a sample of gas through an inlet passage into a sampling chamber, in response to a change in gas pressure or a change in flow rate in the inlet passage. When a suspect breaths into a main flow tube the rate of flow will rise and then after a period will fall. The piston is designed to trigger automatically when the rate starts to fall and in this way the sample is taken at a late stage in the exhalation cycle so that a test can be applied to alveolar breath, from the deep lung.
