- 1 - Abstract: The invention relates to a gas sensor which is con- structed of an electrically insulating base, electrodes formed on the base, and a gas sensitive film formed on the surface of the base at a portion where it detects a gas to be sensed, e.g. oxygen. The gas sensor of the present in- vention is characterized in that the gas sensitive film is a thermally-sprayed film which is made of an oxide having a perovskite structure. The thermally-sprayed film has a surface formed with fine cracks so that its effect- ive surface area is increased and its response time is accordingly increased. Moreover, the thermal spraying process is carried out in such a manner that impurities that adversely affect the reliability of the sensor are avoided. The gas sensor may have its gas sensitive film coated with a ceramic material so that its performance may be further improved while the gas sensitive film is protected. Furthermore, it is also effective to use the electrically insulating base to support another sensors so that both sensors share a common support.
