A system for detecting gas leaking out of a joint in a gas transport and/or storage system is provided. The joint has an interface formed of first and second confronting surfaces. The system includes a plurality of gas sensors and a data acquisition unit. The sensors are adapted for mounting at spaced locations with respect to one another about at least a portion of the joint closely adjacent the confronting surfaces and are configured, e.g., are flexible, so that they can be readily mounted thereat irrespective of the contour of that portion of the joint. The data acquisition unit receives signals from the sensors to provide an indication of leakage of gas at the interface and an indication of the location of the portion of the interface at which the leakage has occurred.
