In a catalytic sensor, a bead 1 is located within a can 2 having an aperture 3 in its front surface. The bead 1 is surrounded by thermally insulating material 9, such as glass fibre and a filter material 10 is arranged between the bead 1 and the aperture 3 in the can 2. This acts to remove H2S or other inhibiting gases before they reach the bead 1 and impair its performance. The thermally insulating material allows the filter material to be included whilst still permitting the bead 1 to be operated at a high temperature.
