A gas seal for a shaft in which both the stator sealing ring and the rotor sealing ring are composed of materials having high strength, high modulus of elasticity, high hardness and high thermal conductivity. The rings have pore volumes of less than 1% and a surface roughness of less than 0.02 micrometers (Ra) and the polar moment of inertia of the stator ring is such as to resist temperature-dependent torsional deformations of its end face. Under these conditions, leakage can be minimized without regard for a pressure distribution in the dynamic gas seal gap to generate torsional deformation counteracting moments.
