Abstract of the Disclosure Gas-liquid contact by blowing a gas below the level of a liquid contained in a tank and thus forming bubbles can be effectively accomplished if a sparger having a specific structure is used for introducing the gas into the liquid and dispersing gas bubbles into the liquid and specific sparging conditions are selected so that the surface of the liquid intruded in the sparger is maintained at a certain level. This sparger comprises a tubular member having an open bottom end and openings on the side wall thereof and the position of the openings on the side wall is at a distance from the open bottom end. The sparging conditions are selected so that the surface of the liquid intruded in the sparger is maintained at a level below the openings on the side wall but above the open bottom end. In the sparger having this specific structure, the gas is dispersed into the liquid only through the opening on the side wall of the tubular member.
