ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A high speed centrifugal compressor driven through interconnection of the centrifugal compressor's input shaft and the power turbine shaft of a power turbine wheel having a hollow central portion for admission of cooling air. Within the compressor casing are mounted the first and second cartridge assemblies through which the compressor shaft extends. The first cartridge assembly includes high speed thrust and journal bearings and a high speed mechanical oil seal. The second cartridge assembly includes high speed journal bearings and a high pressure oil seal. Both cartridge assemblies may provide for reduction of the pressure of the sealing oil used in lubrication of the bearings.
