ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE It is known that centrifugal compressors may be driven at high shaft speeds through use of gear trains interposed between the compressor and the prime mover. In this invention a high speed centrifugal compressor is driven through direct close coupling of the centrifugal compressor's input shaft with the power transfer shaft of a power turbine wheel. A bearing bracket is mounted on the compressor casing and tilted shoe bearings are provided concentric to the input and power transfer shafts. The power turbine wheel has a hollow central portion for admitting cooling air.
