-15- ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A lubrication supply system for providing lubricant to the bearings and the gear box assemblies of a gas turbine engine includes a three stage control valve means inter- posed between the source or pressurized lubricant and the bearings. The control valve is responsive to the engine speed which determines the level of pressurization of the pressurized lubricant. The control valve may be in the form of a poppet valve including a housing having two co- axial, slidably mounted poppet members. The first poppet is a spring-biased, start-up poppet member which controls the flow of lubricant through the control valve and out of a first aperture which is in communication with the bear- ings. A spring-biased, modulating poppet member cooperates with the start-up poppet to control the flow of pressurized lubricant through second and third apertures which are in communication with a bypass conduit extending to the source of pressurized lubricant. In operation, at shut-off engine speeds, for example, at or below 20% compressor speed, the start-up poppet closes off the first aperture and thus pre- vents flow of lubricant to the bearing package, thereby minimizing oil leakage from the bearing package and subse- quent engine smoking. The pressurized lubricant flow through the control valve is bypassed through the second aperture and conducted via the bypass conduit for return to the source of pressurized flow. As the engine speed in- creases, the start-up poppet is actuated to gradually open the first aperture to allow a limited flow of lubricant to the bearing package. At engine idle speed, the start-up poppet and the modulating poppet are actuated to positions to provide a controlled amount of lubricant to the bearing package, with the excess lubricant being ducted through the second aperture and the bypass conduit back to the source of pressurized flow. At the maximum power operating mode of the engine, the start-up poppet and the modulating pop- pet are fully actuated so that the first aperture is fully uncovered and a desired maximum flow is provided to the bearing package, with excess flow being provided through the modulating poppet and the third aperture to the bypass -16- conduit for return to the source of pressurized flow.
