Abstract This invention relates to a method of and apparatus for the gasification of powdered carbonaceous materials e.g. coal, coke, pitch or coal tar, wherein a hot spot is formed on a bath of molten iron by blowing a group of oxygen-containing jets onto the surface of the iron, and the powdered carbonaceous material with carrier gas is simultaneously blown onto the hot spot. By the practice of the invention the efficiency of gasification is increased over previously-known methods of gasification, and impurities particularly CO2 in the produced gas may significantly be reduced.
