A gasket for sealing a fluid environment is made with a metal base or core having an elastomeric coating bonded thereto. The choice of elastomeric coating and its thickness is determined by the swelling of the elastomer when exposed to the fluid(s) to be sealed. The swelling supplements the clamping load provided by the bolts, or the like, and provides a better seal by localized swelling which is inverse to the loading. The gasket coating is preferably fluoroelastomer for a HFC refrigerant lubricant mix.
