A composition for treating the gastrointestinal tract comprising a porous insoluble absorbent in which the pores of the insoluble absorbent are clogged by a coating material which causes the insoluble absorbent to adhere to the gastrointestinal lining. Active ingredients, including antacids, antibiotics, antibacterial agents, platelet inhibitors, antispasmodics, and sporifics, can be mixed with or absorbed into the composition.
