ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The conventional gate latch used on farms includes a casing with a sliding bolt for movement between a latched position in a loop or socket, and a handle for manually moving the bolt to the extended latch position and a retracted, unlatched position. Such a latch can be opened by an animal. A relatively simple gate latch for solving this problem includes an elongated plate with a longitudinally extending channel in one surface thereof, a bolt slidable in the channel for movement between an extended, latching position in which the bolt extends beyond one end of the plate into a loop mounted on a fence adjacent to the gate opening, and a retracted position, a pair of detents on the plate extending into the channel for engaging one end of the bolt in the latching position for preventing movement of the bolt to the open position until the bolt is moved slightly toward the latching position and rotated out of alignment with the detent.
