A gate latch includes a male latch member and a female latch member. The male latch member is movable between an extended and a retracted position, with a spring biasing the male latch member into the extended position. The female latch member has a male latch member receiving aperture bounded by at least one sidewall with a unidirectional pivotally mounted barrier that swings inwardly but not outwardly. The barrier pivots inwardly to the open position to permit the male latch member to enter into the receiving aperture. A spring biases the barrier into a closed position. In the closed position, the male latch member is precluded by the barrier from exiting the receiving aperture. The gate latch is opened by telescopically retracting the male latch member, and closed by swinging the gate shut with sufficient force to pivot the barrier to the open position.
