A hopper car gate outlet structure is has one part connected to the hopper near the hopper outlet, the part extending outwardly from the tapered hopper wall to provide a mounting for a gate outlet. The mounting includes a land specifically oriented to mate with the outlet gate, and an outer portion for connection to a reinforcing formation. In one example the reinforcing formation is bent back toward, and attached to the hopper. In all examples the reinforcing formation is shaped to facilitate access to the fastening hardware used to mount the outlet gate to the hopper. The reinforcing formation discourages deformation of the land, and in so doing discourages the migration and collection of material from the hopper discharge in the outlet, such that contamination of subsequent loads of material in the hopper is also discouraged.
