GATE VALVE HAVING A SINGLE FLOATING SEAT AND A FIXED SEAT Abstract of the Disclosure A gate valve has a metal housing with upstream and downstream facing annular recesses surrounding the bore and upstream and downstream seat ring members mounted in the recesses. The upstream seat ring member is mounted to float axially relative to the bore, and has an annular deformable sealing member of consumable material extending beyond the sealing face to contact the gate. An O-ring in the upstream recess behind the seat member urges the seat member in the downstream direction and forms a seal therearound in the upstream recess. The downstream seat ring member is rigidly mounted in the downstream recess in an interference fit which provides metal-to-metal sealing with the housing. An annular deformable sealing member of consumable material extends be- yond the downstream seat sealing face to contact the gate. Upon assembly of the valve a slight interference is produced between the gate and the annular sealing members. The consu- mable material is at least partially consumed at high tempe- ratures so that when the gate is in the closed position it is urged downstream by fluid pressure into metal-to-metal sealing contact with the downstream seat member.
