ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A gauge for detecting or measuring cross-sectional dimensions or deviations from a pre-determined shape or cross- sectional dimension of an elongate object, such as a metal rod or bar, comprises a tubular housing whose longitudinal axis is coincident with the intended path of travel of the object to be gauged. The gauge carries a pulsed light source which directs a collimated beam of pulsed light onto objects as they pass through the tubular housing. Mounted on the housing at a loca- tion diametrically opposed to the pulsed light source is an assembly of photo diodes which receive images of boundary por- tions of the illuminated moving objects and produce electrical signals from which the parameters to be detected or measured can be derived.
