ABSTRACT A vertical axis wind turbine is disclosed having a rotor having a centrally disposed axis or rotor shaft oriented in the vertical direction being supported for rotation by fluid injected into a space below the rotor. In one embodiment, a bull gear supports the rotor, a base is provided below the bull gear and the bull gear being adapted to rotate above the base. The bull gear and base present a hollow housing and shaft terminating in an inner end wall and end surface respectively, the housing for receiving the shaft, one of the said hollow housing or shaft being stationary and the other being rotatable with respect thereto and secured to the bull gear. The shaft and housing when secured together present a space between the inner end wall and end surface. A fluid passageway extends into the space created between the inner end wall and end surface for feeding hydraulic fluid under pressure into the space for hydraulically elevating the bull gear relative to the base, guy wires preclude the gear from rising more than a predetermined or controlled distance and hydraulic circuitry is provided for feeding the fluid under pressure to, and draining the fluid from, the space, and a reservoir for such fluid.
