A gear puller has a body that houses an hydraulic mechanism formed by a pair of piston-and-cylinder assemblies, one assembly being positioned toward a head end of the body, and the other assembly being positioned toward a base end of the body. An annular oil chamber extends around the head end of the body. A first check valve sits in a passage between the oil chamber and the cylinder of the one assembly, and a second check valve sits in a passage between the cylinder of the one assembly and the cylinder of the other assembly. A lever and a rod connected to the piston of the one assembly actuate that assembly. A series of pawls, connected to the puller body, and a rod connected to the piston of the other assembly define an arrangement for pulling a gear off of a pole. A spring housed in the body biases the piston of the other assembly away from the base end of the body. A rotatable bolt extends across a flow passage between the cylinder of the other assembly and the oil chamber, controlling oil flow between the two. Use of the gear puller involves positioning the pawls around the gear and bringing the rod of the other assembly against the pole. Actu- ation of the lever relative to the head end of the body moves oil from the cylinder of the one assembly to the cylinder of the other assembly, and results in the gear moving relative to the pole. The bolt is then loosened, allowing the oil in the cylinder of the other assembly to be pushed by the spring into the oil chamber. The bolt is then tightened before further use of the gear puller.
