The present invention provides for a gel form of a live vaccine for administration of live vaccine to poultry hatchlings. The gel form comprises approximately 1.5 to 5.0 percent of an edible polysaccharide temperature setting gelling agent having suspended therein sufficient levels of a live vaccine to provide for immunization of a poultry hatchling flock. The present invention also provides a method for immunizing a poultry flock utilizing a live vaccine of viable organisms, the method comprising preparing a gel form of a live vaccine by preparing a suspension of the viable organisms in cold water, dissolving an edible polysaccharide temperature setting gelling agent in an aqueous solution at or above the melting point of the polysaccharide gelling agent, mixing the organism suspension and the gelling agent solution, pouring the mixture into a suitable container then allowing the mixture to cool and gel to produce a gelled live vaccine comprising from about 1 to about 2.5 percent of an edible polysaccharide gel having suspended therein sufficient levels of the organism to provide immunization to the flock and allowing the poultry flock to feed from the gelled vaccine suspension.

L'invention concerne un vaccin vivant sous forme de gel à administrer aux poussins nouvellement éclos. Le gel comprend environ de 1,5 à 5,0 % d'un agent gélifiant à base de polysaccharide comestible contenant des quantités suffisantes d'un vaccin vivant en suspension pour immuniser un troupeau d'approvisionnement des couvoirs. L'invention a aussi trait à une méthode d'immunisation d'un troupeau de volailles avec un vaccin vivant d'organismes viables, la méthode consistant à préparer une suspension des organismes viables dans de l'eau froide, à dissoudre un agent de gélification à base de polysaccharide comestible dans une solution aqueuse au point de fusion ou au-dessus du point de fusion de l'agent gélifiant à base de polysaccharide, à mélanger la suspension d'organismes et la solution d'agent de gélification, à verser le mélange dans un contenant approprié, puis à laisser le mélange refroidir et se gélifier pour produire un vaccin vivant en gel comportant entre environ 1 et environ 2,5 % d'un gel de polysaccharide comestible contenant en suspension des quantités suffisantes de l'organisme pour immuniser le troupeau et permettre au troupeau de volailles d'absorber la suspension de vaccin en gel.
