A gelling agent for gelling hydrocarbon liquids comprises (a) a minor amount of a high molecular weight diphosphate ester acid or salt thereof synthesized using high molecular weight polyalkylene glycol and (b) a major amount of a phosphate diester acid or salt thereof synthesized from mixed C1-C24 alcohols, preferably C6 to C10 alcohols. The preferred high molecular weight gelling agent additive is an aluminum or ferric salt of an ester prepared from a polypropylene glycol having a molecular weight in the range of 6,000 to 26.000.
