ABSTRACT During polishing of a gemstone (30, 100, 200), a coolant is passed in heat exchange relationship with the gemstone to remove heat. This reduces the risk of temperature degradation of the gemstone. In practice, this can be achieved by passing a fluent coolant through a coolant chamber (34, 124, 214) which forms part of the apparatus that is used to hold the gemstone during polishing and which is in heat exchange relationship with the gemstone held by the apparatus.
