The present invention provides compositions and methods for affecting the transition from vegetative to reproductive growth in a wide variety of plants. A MADS-box gene from rice, OsMADS1, has been isolated and sequenced. Expression of OsMADS1 in transgenic plants dramatically alters development, resulting in early flowering plants with reduced apical dominance, causing both long-day and short-day plants to flower under both short-day and long-day conditions. OsMADS1 is a key regulatory factor determining the transition from shoot apex to floral meristem and is a target for action of flower induction signals.

L'invention concerne des compositions et des procédés destinés à influer sur la transition de la croissance végétative à la croissance reproductive dans une large variété de plantes. On a isolé et séquencé un gène MADS-box à partir de riz, OsMADS1. L'expression du OsMADS1 dans des plantes transgéniques modifie considérablement le développement, avec pour effet une floraison précoce des plantes avec une dominance apicale réduite, provoquant la floraison de plantes à la fois de jours longs et de jours courts dans des conditions à la fois de jours courts et de jours longs. Le OsMADS1 est un facteur régulateur clé déterminant la transition d'un sommet de pousse au méristème floral, il constitue une cible d'action pour des signaux de production de fleurs.
