The present invention provides nucleotide sequences that identify and encode a novel gene (DHD) that is normally highly expressed in mammalian striatum, nucleus accumbens and olfactory tubercule. Decreases in expression of this gene accompany the development of CAG repeat disorders such as Huntington's disease. The present invention also provides for antisense molecules to the nucleotides, methods for measuring the expression of the sequence, expression vectors for the sequence, and genetically engineered host cells for the expression of DHD. This novel sequence is particularly useful for screening candidate compounds for their ability to prevent neurodegeneration in various neurological disorders.
