A general analysis system for performing an analysis used in the control of an industrial process. The general analysis sys- tem comprises a general analysis program for performing at least one analysis on a set of data and an analysis control data for controlling the analysis of the data set. According to the present invention, the general analysis program comprises a plurality of analysis primitives and the analysis control data comprises a plurality of analysis modules. An analysis may be constructed from a set of analysis modules and performed by interpreting this set using at least one of the analysis primitives.
