- 13 - ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Electrical resistance variation in a sensor element is generated by fabricating the element from a metal oxide ceramic material, embedding electrodes in the sensor element, and decreasing the porosity of the sensor to decrease the rate of variation of electrical resistance as a function of partial pressure of oxygen in the environment of the sensor element. The sensor is the then placed at a temperature above 700°F in an environment wherein the partial pressure of oxygen varies, so that the electrical resistance of the sensor varies with the partial pressure of oxygen.
