The invention relates to the generation of radio frequency modulated optical radiation, in particular for use in a radio over fibre communications system. It has been found that a semiconductor electroabsorption modulator can efficiently modulate an input optical signal at harmonics of the electrical modulation frequency applied to the electroabsorption modulator. A low frequency design, and thus low cost, electroabsorption modulator can be utilised to generate higher order harmonics of an electrical drive signal for use in a radio over fibre communications system.

L'invention concerne la production d'un rayonnement optique modulé par radiofréquences, utilisé notamment dans un système de communications radio par fibres optiques. On a découvert qu'un modulateur d'électro-absorption à semi-conducteur peut moduler efficacement un signal optique d'entrée aux harmoniques de la fréquence de modulation électrique appliquée à ce modulateur. On peut utiliser un modulateur d'électro-absorption conçu pour les basses fréquences, et donc peu coûteux, pour produire des harmoniques d'ordre élevé d'un signal d'attaque électrique, utiles dans un système de communications radio par fibres optiques.
