ABSTRACT A communications terminal capable of being configured so as to emulate the protocol and functional characteristics of and thus communicate with a variety of data processing units. The terminal includes a microprocessor coupled to a volatile memory and to first and second nonvolatile memories. A first set of instructional signals stored in the first nonvolatile memory con- trols the microprocessor so that communication with a host com- puter can be established. The host computer transmits to the terminal emulation data which is stored in the second nonvolatile memory as a second set of instruction signals. Thereafter, in order to communicate with another data processing unit, the microprocessor of the terminal is controlled by the second set of instruction signals.
