The present invention relates to the DNA sequence for eukaryotic genes encoding .epsilon. cyclase isolated from romaine lettuce as well as vectors containing the same and hosts transformed with said vectors. The present invention provides methods for controlling the ratio of various carotenoids in a host and to the production of novel carotenoid pigments. The present invention also provides a method for treating disease by administering carotenoids obtained from transformed hosts, or by administering a composition containing the transformed hosts.

L'invention concerne la séquence d'ADN de gènes eucaryotiques codant pour la .epsilon. cyclase isolée dans la laitue romaine, ainsi que des vecteur contenant cette séquence et des hôtes transformés à l'aide de ces vecteurs. L'invention concerne des procédés de régulation du taux de différents caroténoïdes dans un hôte et la production de nouveaux pigments caroténoïdes. L'invention concerne en outre un traitement de pathologies comprenant l'administration de caroténoïdes obtenus dans des hôtes transformés ou d'une composition contenant les hôtes transformés.
