Nucleic acid sequences encoding .epsilon.-cyclase, isopentenyl pyrophosphate isomerase and .beta.-carotene hydroxylase as well as vectors containing the same and hosts transformed with the vectors. Methods for controlling the ratio of various carotenoids in a host and for the production of novel carotenoid pigments. The present invention also provides a method for screening for eukaryotic genes encoding carotenoid biosynthesis, and for modifying the disclosed enzymes.

Cette invention, qui a trait à des séquences nucléotidiques codant une .epsilon.-cyclase, une isopentényl pyrophosphate isomérase et une .beta.-carotène hydroxylase, concerne également des vecteurs les contenant ainsi que des hôtes transformés à l'aide de ces vecteurs. Elle porte, en outre, sur des méthodes permettant de maîtriser le rapport existant entre divers caroténoïdes présents dans un hôte ainsi que sur des techniques de production de nouveaux pigments caroténoïdes. Elle a trait, de surcroît, à une méthode de criblage de gènes eucaryotes codant la biosynthèse du caroténoïde ainsi qu'à une technique de modification des enzymes susmentionnées.
