A genetic engineering process is disclosed for the production of S-(+)-2,2-dimethylcyclopropanecarboxamide. For this purpose, a new DNA that codes for a stereospecific hydrolase is isolated from a microorganism. This DNA is then ligated in an expression vector, and a hybrid plasmid results, which is used to transform microorganisms. These microorganisms are then able to biotransform the R-(-) isomer in racemic R,S-(~)-2,2-dimethylcyclopropanecarboxamide into R-(-)-2,2-dimethylcyclopropanecarboxylic acid. Optically active S-(-H)-2,2-dimethylcyclopropanecarboxamide is thus obtained.
