ABSTRACT Germanium compounds of the general formula Image (1) wherein: R1 - R4 independently from each other are substi- tuted or unsubstituted organic groups, which are bound to germanium via a carbon atom; Y represents a hydrogen atom or an anionic group, i.e.: an inorganic anionic group or an organic group which is bound to germanium via a heteroatom, X represents the group Y or the groups R1 - R4; and, Z is a group -(CH2)n-in which n is 0-6, a substituted or unsubstituted aryl group, or an organogermyl group having the formula: Image n wherein R5 equals R1 - R4; P equals Y; and n equals 0-6; have been found to exhibit antitumour activity together with little or no kidney toxicity-and are thus of interest as a medicament. Processes for the preparation of the germanium compounds are described and exemplified.
