Disclosed is a glow element, preferably a glow ring, to assist ignition and combustion of a fuel used in an internal combustion engine. Fuel jets from an injector valve directly injected into a combustion chamber during operation of the engine will impact directly or be directed to the glow element such that each fuel jet is influenced by the glow element. The glow element is made from high temperature materials and may include catalytic materials to promote combustion. The glow element may also be active, that is, externally heated, or be passive, that is, heated by the combustion environment.
