ABSTRACT OF THE INVENTION An improved process for making acrylamide from a composition of acrylonitrile and water utilizing an improved Raney copper catalyst. This catalyst is prepared by contacting particulate copper/aluminum alloy particles with an aqueous solution containing dissolved therein both alkali metal hydroxide and hydroxyl containing hydrocarbon compound having at least three carbon atoms per molecule and further having at least three oxygen containing groups per molecule.
