ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE In a labelling machine a layer of glue is applied to a rotating glueing roller and a series of glueing pallets moved in succession past the glueing roller have the receiving surface thereof rolled against the glueing roller to transfer a coating of glue to the receiving surface for subsequent application to a label. The gap during this rolling operation between the receiving surface and the glueing roller must be closely controlled. However through malfunction of the machine unwanted label material may be present on the receiving surface when it is rolled against the glueing roller. Therefore it has been customary to make glueing rollers of hard rubber composition, but such rollers are subject to damage or even destruction should extraneous label material become wedged between the scraper and the glue roller. These difficulties are obviated by providing a glueing roller having a cylindrical mantle surface of rigid wear resistant material which is resiliently support- ed on a sleeve of the roller and accordingly is radially yieldable to accommodate their presence of extraneous labelling material.
