The present invention provides a phthalate-free plasticizer for polymer resins. The phthalate-free plasticizer according to the invention includes a mixture of different triesters of glycerin, at least one of which meets the formula: CH2(OOR1)CH(OOR2)CH2(OOR3) wherein at least two of R1, R2, and R3 are different alkyl or aryl groups. Phthalate-free plasticizers according to the invention can be made by esterifying glycerin with a mixture of carboxylic acids in the presence of a catalyst. In the presently most preferred embodiment of the invention, the mixture of carboxylic acids includes benzoic acid and butanoic acid. The plasticizer according to the invention can be used to modify the properties of a wide variety of polymers including vinyl polymers, rubbers, polyurethanes, and acrylics, and has superb thermostability and low volatility.

L'invention concerne un plastifiant exempt de phtalates pour résines polymères. Ce plastifiant exempt de phtalates est constitué d'un mélange de différents triesters de glycérine, dont l'un au moins répond à la formule: CH¿2?(OOR¿1?)CH(OOR¿2?)CH¿2?(OOR¿3?) dans laquelle au moins deux des groupes R¿1?, R¿2?, et R¿3? sont des groupes alkyle ou aryle différents. Ces plastifiants exempts de phtalates peuvent être préparés par estérification de glycérine avec un mélange d'acides carboxyliques, en présence d'un catalyseur. Dans la forme de réalisation actuellement préférée, le mélange d'acides carboxyliques comprend de l'acide benzoïque et de l'acide butanoïque. Le plastifiant décrit peut être utilisé pour modifier les propriétés d'un large éventail de polymères, notamment les polymères vinylique, les caoutchoucs, les polyuréthannes et les acryliques, et présente en outre une thermostabilité très élevée et une faible volatilité.
