GRADED REFRACTIVE INDEX OPTICAL FIBER ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A multimode optical fiber waveguide comprising a central core layer having a refractive index decreasing continuously in the radial direction from its center, and a second layer having a uniform refractive index lower than the lowest refractive index of the core. Mode coupling is achieved by introducing carefully designed fluctuations into the fiber core, while radiation losses due to such mode coupling are minimized by the abrupt index discontinuity in the refractive index. In one illustrative embodiment, mode filters spaced at certain intervals along the waveguide are used to suppress the buildup of power in predetermined modes. In another illustrative embodiment, the refractive index of the fiber is such that mode filtering is achieved continuously over its entire length thereby avoiding the use of discrete mode filters.
