4693-3707 ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE This invention relates to an improved method for forming a grafted rubbery particle suitable for use as a reinforcing rubber in a thermoplastic resin. The grafted rubbery particles produced by the method of the present invention have a substan- tially continuous, generally uniform layer of polymer grafted to the rubbery particle core. In contrast to the known methods, this invention involves a sequence of steps that result in poly- merizing the elastomeric core, of generally hydrophobic monomers, in a manner which provides a thin hydrophilic outer layer. This thin hydrophilic outer layer is sufficient to encourage subsequent substantially continuous generally uniform grafting of rigid phase monomers on to the elastomeric core.
