ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Acid-treated and water-washed graphite particles are further treated with an aqueous solution of a phosphoric acid or a salt thereof, then expanded by heating to 20 to 70 times (in terms of bulk density ratio) the original graphite particles and the expanded particles are pressure-molded to obtain a graphite material having compressibility and recovering property and suitable for use in making gaskets, packings, heat insulators, and cushion elements which are resistant to oxidation and serviceable at high temperatures.
