ABSTRACT A grate for a trench is of generally rectangular form having a pair of parallel longitudinal edges and regularly spaced transverse straps defining slots between them, a strap and one of its adjacent slots forming a pattern repeat wherein one transverse edge of the grate has only a first portion of a pattern repeat and the opposite transverse edge has a portion of a pattern repeat complementary to said first portion of a pattern repeat.
