ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE An air cooled feed grate is defined by plural grate bars which cooperate to define internal air flow channels and ports through which the cooling air may be discharged into a combustion chamber. The cooling air flow discharge ports diverge in the downstream direction and have axes which are inclined at an angle in the range of 5° to 60° with respect to a plane defined by the grate bar backs. The discharge ports are formed in the heads of the grate bars and the heads are angled such that the tops of the bars extend downstream a greater distance than the bottoms.
