A gravity assisted rotary engine which includes a rotating shaft supported on a shaft support. One or more arm mounting sleeves are fixed transversely to the shaft. Each arm mounting sleeve has an arm which axially slides, with weights on each end of each arm. Telescopic actuators axially move each arm relative to its arm mounting sleeve. A controller controls each of the telescopic actuators to selectively move each arm relative to its arm mounting sleeve to an extended over centre position as each arm passes the twelve o'clock rotational position. The over centre position of the weight on the extended arm causes the weight to fall by force of gravity, thereby imparting a rotational force to the shaft.
