ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The burying or burning of heavy oil sludges is no longer legal and the separation of such sludges into solid and liquid components represents a serious problem. A relatively simple apparatus for effecting such separation includes an elongated tank of generally V-shaped cross section with an inlet chamber at one end for receiving sludge, a heating chamber adjacent the inlet chamber for receiving lighter liquid from the inlet chamber, and a baffle chamber separated from the inlet and heating chambers by a partition for receiving liquid from the heating chamber. A trough containing a helical auger extends the entire length of the bottom of the tank for receiving solids and discharging such solids to a bucket conveyor at an outlet end of the tank. Larger solids are separated from the sludge in the inlet chamber, some liquid and solids being fed into the heating chamber for heating to reduce the viscosity of the mixture. The resulting mixture passes around baffles in the baffle chamber, where additional solids settle into the trough or discharge from the tank by the auger The auger grinds the solids into small particles to extract more oil therefrom.
